In June 1944 the Normandy landings opened a new front in north-western France. After taking the beaches, Allied forces moved inland towards the city of Caen, facing fierce resistance from the Germans. The Seaforths were involved in costly actions around the industrial area of Colombelles (on the north-eastern edge of Caen).
